Work contract

When you are starting at a new job, you should remember a few golden rules. Find out your wages, your days off and your benefits. Your work contract should include all this information.

This agreement must provide at least the minimum benefits required by the collective agreement for the industry. It is also possible to agree on terms and conditions that are more generous to the employee. Although the employment contract need not be in writing, it is wise to do so.

It’s important to remember to sign a work contract before you actually start: one copy for you and the other to the employer.

It’s always good to check the authenticity of the contract with the shop steward at the work place. A written agreement is always better than a verbal one, since the written one allows you to check what you’ve agreed.

You can check the agreed working time and other necessary information from the contract. It will also be of good use when you visit the employment agency or when you write your CV for the next work place.

These points should be included in the work contract

  • The name and identification number of the employee and the employer as well place of residence and business location.
  • Term of the work contract (is it a contract for an indefinite period or a fixed-term contract?)
  • Period of employment in fixed-term contracts and the reason for the fixed-term clause
  • Working hours
  • Responsibilities
  • Salary and pay period
  • Holidays
  • Term of notice
  • The applied collective agreement
  • Date and signature
