I studied Finnish and at the same time I started working as a part-time housekeeper in a hotel. After a while, I switched to full-time work and became a cleaning manager at my site. At the same time, I also became an Occupational Safety and Health representative. Last year, I was elected a full-time OSH representative and a deputy chief union representative. I applied for these positions, because I want to help other employees. Our company has many employees, and we have people from many different countries who work in the same team. As an OSH representative, I want to be warm and approachable, because my experiences were not always like this when I came to Finland. Hotel housekeepers work hard. It is important that they have their own week, during which we can show our appreciation for the important work that they do. Our workplace offers opportunities for employees. When I meet employees, I try to encourage them to develop their skills and keep an open mind. Housekeepers should be proud of the work they do. I now plan my work far in advance. I have travelled around Finland to meet and talk to workers at all kinds of cleaning sites. I advise them on occupational safety matters, and together with the employer, we strive to prevent accidents and collaborate to improve workplace well-being.
