Anton Pullukkutti and Fred Miller appointed as chairs of PAM’s Impact Forum

At the inaugural meeting of the Impact Forum, a tied vote resulted in the appointment of two co-chairs. The newly elected chairs reflect on their motivations and objectives, as the Forum begins its work.

PAM’s new advisory body will led by Anton Pullukkuti (on the left) and Fred Miller, both of whom work in the hospitality industry.

What motivated you to join PAM’s Impact Forum?

Fred:

– It’s so important to have this kind of representation in Finland. I’ve worked in the hospitality industry in three different countries – the UK, Sweden, and now Finland – and each time, my rights as a worker have been different. I’ve experienced zero-hour contracts, fixed-term jobs, and even being terminated during probation without any support. I joined PAM to have support in these kinds of situations and want to help others to have it too. I am a huge believer in unification of people.

Anton:

– At the start of this year, I started to encourage international workers to join PAM and contacted existing members in my home city Vaasa. When I came across the Impact Forum, it felt like a natural step and a way to continue this work in a more official role.

Which issues do you feel most passionate about, and where do you hope to make a difference?

Anton:

– I want to focus on three core areas: workplace diversity, an inclusive society, and workers’ well-being. Supporting Finnish language learning through an online platform would be a key step that would help international members integrate and even support their journey towards permanent residency or citizenship. I also want to strengthen the role of the international workers within PAM to advocate their rights and advance membership.

Fred:

– Nothing makes me angrier than the thought of people being taken advantage of. I would like to work towards ensuring more securities for workers who are often the most vulnerable in Finland. I think that can be achieved in lots of different ways depending on the person or the sector.

What are your priorities for the Forum’s work?

Fred:

– The first important call for me is to boost membership and raise awareness. I would like to educate people and to make sure everyone understands that they have the same rights as anyone else, even if they weren’t born in Finland.

Anton:

– In addition to those, Impact Forum should have clear, shared goals and a defined set of tasks to achieve them within a specific timeframe. We also need to decide on the right tools and methods to reach those goals.

The Impact Forum has just held its first meeting. What stood out to you, and what would you like to add to conclude?

Fred:

– It was nice to see the whole range of private service sector industries being represented in the impact forum. I want to thank PAM for recognizing the need for this forum and the opportunity to be part of it. Representation really matters.

Anton:

– I am very pleased to see this important step being taken to listen to the voices of international workers. We have now a diverse network of workers from multiple sectors, which can make a real impact. What I would like to say to all the international workers is that let’s unite and let’s our voice be heard here in Finland!
