Nordic trade unions tell Wolt and other platform companies to play by the Nordic rules

Platform companies are putting pressure on the Nordic labour market model.

Last year Finland’s Supreme Administrative Court ruled that Wolt couriers are employees. Despite the court’s decision, Wolt has not changed its practices accordingly. The majority of couriers are still misclassified as entrepreneurs.

Service Union United PAM and its couriers’ branch PAM Couriers Finland stated last Friday that there were no grounds to continue the long-running collective bargaining negotiations with Wolt.

– Wolt’s aim didn’t seem to be to reach a solution or to seek changes that would improve couriers’ situation. Instead, what seemed important was to be able to say publicly that Wolt was involved in negotiations, assessed PAM President Annika Rönni-Sällinen .

Similar experiences negotiating with various platform companies have been reported among the unions that signed the statement. Their joint statement was published this morning on the Nordic Transport Workers’ Federation page.

– Wolt, Bolt and companies like them should know that we in the Nordic trade unions understand the spirit of the game and will not accept it, says NTF and Finnish Transport Workers’ Union AKT President Ismo Kokko.

– Platform companies do not only reshaping industries, but also putting pressure on the Nordic labour market model. In the Nordic countries, we believe in fair wages, strong workers’ rights, and collective agreements, not a system built on insecurity and low-paid work, the unions say in their joint statement.

According to the unions, the spread of platform work has come with a tailwind of problems across the globe: tax avoidance, circumvention of rules and regulations, avoiding collective bargaining agreements, social dumping, and companies refusing to assume employer responsibility.

The unions’ instruction to platform companies is to engage in genuine negotiations and to respect the values and practices of the Nordic labour market model.

The joint statement is signed by the Nordic Transport Workers’ Federation NTF, Service Union United PAM, Finnish Transport Workers’ Union AKT, the Norwegian Fellesforbundet, Danish 3F Transport, the Swedish Transport Workers’ Union, the Icelandic commerce union LiV and the Icelandic service sector union VR.
